Feliz Cinco de Mayo!
The 5th of May is an important day in Mexico’s history, but it has also become a
day of fun and celebration in the United States. Many believe that Cinco de Mayo
is Mexico’s Independence Day. In fact they declared independence from Spain in September,
1810.
Cinco de Mayo is a commemoration of an important battle that occurred on May 5,
1862 against an attempt at colonization by the French Emperor, Napoleon III. As
the story goes, a calvary of ill equipped soliders, lead by General Zaragoza, defeated
the French who were attempting to over take Mexico City.
In Mexico, the day is primarily celebrated in the region around Puebla, about 100
miles east of Mexico City, where the battle took place. However, in areas around
the United States, Tucson included, Cinco de Mayo is a reason to party and celebrate.
So strike up the mariachi band and have a fiesta!
Best wishes from David M. Lovitt, Jr. and the team at DM Lovitt Insurance Agency

Brewing a Pot of Savings
With the economy as it is, it seems like everyone is looking for ways to save money.
We aren’t just trying to trim our personal budgets. Businesses are also looking
for ways to cut back and reduce expenses.
Some expenses are easy to identify and reduce, like turning off extra lights or
eliminating the free donuts in the breakroom (But not the coffee! For everyone’s
sake, don’t get rid of the coffee!). Others may take a little more effort to find,
but are well worth the savings in the end.
One such expense is your business insurance. If you haven’t talked to your agent
about changes in your business, you could be spending more than you need to. Do
you have…
Fewer employees?
Lower payroll?
Changes in your operations?
Have you sold any contents or equipment?
If so, you may be able to make changes to your business policies and lower your
annual premium. Just think, the money you save could buy more coffee. Alert and
energized employees means higher productivity, which creates more sales, which could
mean a profit for the company. Problem solved.
So, don’t wait. Pour yourself a fresh cup and call your agent today.

DIAM – Disability Insurance Awareness Month
Many people have bought life insurance after giving serious thought to how their
death might impact their families’ living standards. Few, though, give the same
level of consideration to disability insurance. Ironically, the typical worker
faces a much higher risk of extended disability than of premature death. But for
a variety of reasons, disability insurance remains one of the most overlooked and
misunderstood forms of insurance.
Though disability is behind a significant number of home foreclosures and personal
bankruptcies, insuring against it has not been a high priority for most workers
because many assume they’re already covered through Social Security, state-mandated
Workers’ Compensation or employer-provided group plans. However, there are numerous
holes in this safety net of coverage.
Only about 39% of the 2.1 million workers who applied for Social Security Disability
Insurance benefits in 2005 were approved. And those who are approved get an average
benefit of just $1,004 monthly – hardly enough to replace the average worker’s income.
Workers comp covers only work-related disabilities, but 95% of disabling accidents
and illnesses aren’t work-related. And what about coverage through work? It’s a
great employee benefit, but it’s not available to many workers. Only 36% of all
full-time employees have access to long-term disability insurance through their
employers.
So what’s a worker to do? Explore his or her or options. If your employer offers
disability coverage, take the time to find out if the coverage would be sufficient
to meet your income replacement needs in the event of a disabling illness or accident.
If it’s insufficient, your employer may offer you the option to increase your disability
benefit, often through a voluntary payroll deduction. Another option is to purchase
coverage on your own.
You may not realize it, but your home, your car and your jewelry are NOT your most
valuable assets. It’s your ability to earn an income. Without it, you wouldn’t be
able to make your monthly mortgage or car loan payments.
May is Disability Insurance Awareness Month (DIAM), the perfect time for a disability
insurance “reality check.” Take this opportunity to make sure you’d be ok financially
in the event of a disability that keeps you out of work for an extended period of
time.
